Cycling on Anglesey
Anglesey is a great place for cycling and whilst extremely popular with local enthusiasts remains something of a ‘hidden gem’. With 125 miles of stunning coastline and the unspoilt countryside at the heart of the Island every ride offers great views and a chance to get away from it all.
There are routes for everyone, from the ‘round anglesey’ challenge for experienced cyclists to short off-road trails for families at Newborough. We also have two national cycle routes on the Island. Anglesey’s network of quiet country lanes provide lots of opportunities for independent exploration.
For those with a competitive spirit the ‘Tour de Mon’ cycling sportive takes place in August each year with routes ranging from 42 miles to 107 miles.
Our 4-star green award winning accommodation is ideal whether you are a family group bringing your bikes or a cycle club looking for a weekend somewhere new, secure bike storage is available and we can provide a hearty breakfast to power your day.
Our favourite routes include:
Lon Las Cefni Northern Section – Lon Las Copr – 34 miles
This route offers spectacular sea views and a journey through a millennium or two of Anglesey history. The route travels past Cemlyn Nature Reserve, with its large lagoon, separated from the sea by a spectacular, naturally-created shingle ridge. This reserve is home to a wealth of birds, wildflowers and marine creatures making it a delightful palce to visit all year round.
Stop off at Swtan, the island’s last surviving thatched cottage. Llynnon Mill, the only working windmill in Wales and the “Copper Kingdom” at Parys Mountain and Amlwch port that gives the trail its name. Joining up with National Cycle route 5 makes it a really enjoyable circular route. Map Link
Ynys Cybi (Holy Island) circular route – 17.5 miles
A circular route you can start at Outdoor Alternative following minor roads through Trearddur Bay past rocky coves to the iconic lighthouse at South Stack taking refreshments at the RSPB cafe. Returning through Holyhead with its Roman remains and the beautiful Penrhos Coastal Park. Map Link
Tour de Mon Route ‘Canol’ – 76 miles
This, the mid distance of the three Tour de Mon routes, taking you across the centre of the island to the picturesque cefni reservoir and back along the stunning north coast via Moelfre, Amlwch and Cemaes. With stunning clifftop views as far as the Isle of Man on a clear day a challenging but very scenic ride. Map Link
Newborough Forest family cycle trails – various
There are various off-road routes marked through the forest easily accessible for families of all ages in a safe environment. With the stunning Llanddwyn beach and refreshments and ice creams available in the car park its a great day out. Map Link

What People Say About OA…
15 Years and many more to come
“We have been frequenting Outdoor Alternative for more than 15 years as a group of neighbours and family from Bury. We love the place and it’s beautiful position and accommodation with easy access to the Rhoscolyn beach.
Each year the owners invest that little bit more in the place just to add to the comfort and keep the place up to date. Superb for big family occasions but also has facilities for smaller group and families. Thanks again for the past 15 years and many more to come.”.
Perfect for schools or youth groups
“I’ve just taken a group of 11 and 12 year olds to Outdoor Alternative, with activities provided by b-active. What a fantastic trip! The accommodation is lovely: clean and comfortable inside and out, in a beautiful setting, and we were made to feel very welcome and looked after by Jacqui and Mark, who catered for us with a range of hearty meals, taking various dietary requirements in their stride. The activities with Andy and Steve were perfectly pitched for the group, and it was particularly great that they were provided from the site, with no need to travel except a nice walk down to the beach! This is certainly on my go-again list.”
Great find!
“Just back after a two night stay. Fantastic location a few minutes walk from the beach and 10 minutes from a fabulous pub. Facilities are clean and well kept. Lovely hot showers. Camping field is well kept. Really reasonable too – will definitely be back”.
