Outdoor Alternative was established at our family home Cerrig yr Adar in 1985.
Ian and Margaret wanted to share with others their passion for this very special part of Anglesey. Founded with the underlying principles of affordable accommodation for adventure, education and exploration in the natural environment. Outdoor Alternative is very much a family run business today, with Jacqui and her family living on site managing the day to day running, and more recently Jessica returning to the Island to be involved.
A Greener Place to stay……….
Outdoor Alternative has been developed with environmental consideration from the outset, with a commitment to the principles of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ and keeping the natural and wild elements of the grounds alongside the functional.
What we do……..
Generating Solar electricity…… we produce 8000 units of electricity a year from the sun. Generating 30% of our business electricity and reducing our carbon footprint by 4000 kg a year.
Solar thermal water heating……. heating water from the sun’s rays has reduced our gas consumption and our carbon footprint by another 2000 kg.
Water saving……. our showers are fitted with aerated heads which use 50% less water than a standard shower -without reducing the experience! and washbasin taps and the toilet flushes have water saving devices.
Green clean……. we use the non chemical cleaning system ‘ENJO’ – ‘An Austrian eco award winning system’. We use a range of colour coded micro fibre cloths and water, substantially reducing the amount of chemicals that go into our septic tank and wider environment whilst maintaining a healthier indoor environment.
Recycling…….. we have glass, plastic, cans, paper and card recycling facilities on site.
Animals, growing and composting……. we love this part of our life here at Outdoor Alternative! – we are kept busy with chickens, ducks and pigs, growing our own veg in the polytunnel and gardens, composting and collecting seaweed to nourish the ground. We garden using organic principles and collect water in several water butts and use the original house well to water the polytunnel.
Conservation……. we are situated in 7 acres of grounds and keep ‘wild’ areas of natural habitat to encourage birds and butterflies. we have a wildlife pond and small wooded area. We have bird feeders and boxes and open up the barn doors for the swallows which have nested here for the last 20 years.
Sponsorship……. we are a corporate sponsor of the North Wales wildlife Trust, supporting their conservation and education work across North Wales.
As a result of our work we have been awarded the Green Tourism Business Scheme ‘Gold’ Award for environmentally sustainable business.
